DETROIT, Mich. – The Air Force boxing team split a six-bout card against their service academy counterparts tonight (Oct. 26) at the Chuck Davey Invitational in Detroit. The Falcons posted a 3-3 record in the annual event at the Detroit Athletic Club, with junior Cenada Clifton-Smith earning the team's Boxer of the Week award.
In the final bout of the night, Clifton-Smith captured a 175-pound victory over Navy's Charlie Akoerblom to secure the Falcons' .500 record on the night. Classmates Levi Rate and Austin Dreyer also captured victories in Detroit, as Rate earned a 160-pound decision over Kyle Taylor of Army West Point and Dreyer decisioned Navy's Jay Packer in the 185-pound contest.
Three other Academy boxers also competed tonight. Junior Ife Onigbanjo dropped a 139-pound decision to Navy's Tanner Strawbridge, while seniors Josh Turner (147 pounds, vs Vonn Grant) and Levi Knox (170 pounds, vs Adrian Albin) lost contests to Army West Point contenders.
Air Force finished second in the three-team competition (3-3), as Army West Point went 5-1 and Navy finished with a 1-5 mark. The Falcons return to action next Friday (Nov. 2), when they travel to Army West Point for the annual showdown between the two programs.
