THIS WEEK: The seventh-ranked Falcons return to the road for a pair of WAC match-ups against CSU Bakersfield and Cal-Baptist, Oct. 5 and Oct. 7, respectively. On Friday, Air Force and CSU Bakersfield will meet for the 13th time in program history on the Main Soccer Field at 11:00 a.m. PT; the Falcons leads the series, 7-4-1. On Sunday, Cal-Baptist and Air Force will convene on the Lancers' pitch for their first-ever meeting at 1 p.m. PT.
ON THE MAP: The Falcons remain a consensus top-10 team for the second-straight week. Air Force is up to seventh in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. They are also eighth in the College Soccer News Top 30 and 10th in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25. Seattle U is also back in the rankings, sitting at 24th in the CSN Top 30 and 25th in the USC Top 25 and TDS Top 25.
The United Soccer Coaches switched up the regional ranking system for 2018 and the WAC is now in the Far West Region with the Pac-12 and Big West conferences. Air Force continues to sit atop the rankings for the third-straight week. Seattle U is also in the poll, moving up one spot to fourth.
The WAC continues to have three teams in the top 50 and five in the top 100 of the NCAA RPI rankings. Air Force leads the way at 17. Seattle U is 38th and UT Rio Grande Valley sits at 48th. Houston Baptist is 78th and Kansas City is 90th.
UP NEXT: Air Force returns to the Academy for a three-game stretch, starting off with a match against Houston Baptist, Saturday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m., for Air Force's only game of the week. The Falcons and Huskies will be meeting for the 13th time in program history. Air Force leads the series 6-4-2, with the most recent meeting ending in a 2-0 victory for Air Force at home.
AMONG THE BEST: The class of 2019 is considerably one of the program's best teams to date, adding two All-Americans in the 2017 campaign, a program-best five to the All-West Regional team and another program-best eight to All-WAC teams. In terms of winning, they have posted 45 career wins to date with at least eight games remaining in their career. The most-winning class to date is the class of 1989, who in the season of 1988, recorded their 50th win. Associate head coach Chris Foster was the captain of that team in his senior campaign.
Bone has played in all 45 of Air Force's wins over the last four seasons. Teammate Austin Dewing did not play in one of the wins, totaling 44 career wins with the Falcons. Bone and Dewing are the Falcons' senior-most veterans with Bone making 57 career starts in 70 matches played while Dewing has played in 67 career matches with 38 starts. Albeit Bone has more wins on his career profile, Dewing has the better win-percentage. Bone's win-percentage is .679 while Dewing's is .695.
FOR THE RECORD: The Falcons' 10-game win streak overtakes Lou Sagastume's 1986 team for the program record. The longest Air Force unbeaten streak is currently Doug Hill's 2017 squad who went 14 games without losing (11 wins, three ties). BONE REPEATS WAC OFFENSIVE POTW: Tucker Bone was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 24 - 30. On Thursday against Incarnate Word, he recorded two goals in a 30-second span to give Air Force a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break. He then assisted on Saturday's first goal in a 2-1 double-overtime win over UT Rio Grande Valley. He was previously named WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10, becoming this season's first repeat winner while marking Air Force's fourth weekly honor of the season.
LET'S TALK AIR FORCE: Seven seniors, a pair of juniors and a pair of sophomores make up the Falcons' starting 11, led by team captains Bone, Dewing and Zane Moxley.
Air Force holds the top spot in the WAC in points (87), goals (30), assists (27), least goals allowed (7), goals against average (0.62) and shutouts (5). The Falcons high-powered offense has tallied more than four times as many goals as opponents faced (30-7). Air Force has outshot nine opponents in 11 matches, nearly doubling the shots of opponents faced, 173-89.
When attacking the frame, the Falcons more than double opponents' shots on goal numbers, taking 77 to opponents' 34.
Bone leads the team, and conference, with seven goals, 19 points and three game-winners; marks that put him at 20th in the nation in goals, and ninth in the nation in both points and game-winning goals. Bone and Luis Martinez lead the Falcons with five assists apiece and are tied with three other players for the lead in the league. Bone also leads the team in shots with 27(13), while Dewing leads with 14 shots on frame.
The Air Force defense is firing on all cylinders as well, posting five shutouts in the 10-game winning streak, including a 3-0 routing of nationally-ranked Colgate. The Falcons' defense has held the last five opponents to single-digit shot counts, highlighted by holding Harvard to only two shots on the entire match, on Sept. 16. In regards to minutes played, James Sims (946), Nick Blessing (933) and David Louthan (912) anchor the Falcon defense. Joe Ortiz, who is also an integral part of the defense, has logged a goal and an assist in 866 minutes played.
In net, the Falcons' Andrea Seazzu holds the WAC's best goals against average (0.64) and also leads the league in shutouts (5). He is 10-1 this season and holds a .794 save percentage heading into the weekend. With the assistance of the Falcons' superior defensive line, Seazzu has eight shutouts in 15 career appearances for a 15-1 (.938) career record in the Air Force cage. He has logged more minutes on the field than any other Falcon this season (987:20).
Nationally speaking, Air Force is brushing shoulders with perennial NCAA elites. The Falcons are second in the nation in total goals (30) and total points (87), only second to No. 1 Wake Forest who leads the nation with 34 goals and 108 points. Air Force's 7.91 points per game is a mark high enough for fifth-best in the nation. The Falcons also have the third-best scoring offense, averaging 2.73 goals per-game, while the nation's front-running Demon Deacons average 3.09. Air Force's 10-1 record has yielded the fourth-best W-L-T-percentage in the country (.909), while Wake Forest and St. Mary's (Calif.) remain perfect, and the University of Kentucky is 8-0-1 (.944).
