Pair of freshmen lead the Falcons against nation's top teams
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force golf team finished in 10th place at the 33rd annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Alabama, Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Vestavia Hills, Ala. One of the most prestigious college golf tournaments in the nation, the field featured five teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
The Falcons shot their best round of the tournament, and their best road round of the season, with a 293 in the final round. The team's score of 889, the best road score of the season, placed the Falcons 10 strokes ahead of Army West Point.
Alabama, ranked fourth in the nation, won the tournament with a team score of 838 (-12). Arkansas, ranked 24th, was second with an 829 while 23rd-ranked Auburn was third 835. Air Force placed 10th, right behind 11rh-ranked UNLV and UAB.
Air Force's top two golfers were both freshmen, Jonathan Farmer and Luke Trujillo. They each tied for 33rd overall with a 54-hole score of 218 (+8). Farmer, from Carlsbad, Calif., shot 73-71-74 while Trujillo (from Colorado Springs), shot 73-72-73.
Senior Andy German came in at 227 while junior Anson Kuznik shot 230 and senior Turner Howe shot 236. Kuznik shot a 71 in the final round (+1), to tie with Famer as the best round by a Falcon in the tournament.
Air Force returns to action on Oct. 15-16 at the Bill Cullum Invitational, hosted by Cal State Northridge, in Simi Valley, Calif.
