LMU holds off Air Force in WWPA Third-Place Game

Air Force fell to the Lions, 10-7, to end the 2018 season
FRESNO, Calif. – A late Air Force rally came up short as the Falcons fell to 13th-ranked Loyola Marymount, 10-7, in the third-place game at the Western Water Polo Association Championships, Sunday, Nov. 18, in Fresno, Calif.
Air Force was the No. 5 seed in the tournament and upset No. 4 seed Cal Baptist in the opening round. Loyola was the No. 4 seed. Air Force closed out the 2018 season with a 9-18 overall record, equaling the number of wins from last season.
Air Force struck first as Justin Harrison scored from Luke Andres 26 seconds into the game. After LMU tied it, Edward Smet scored from Andres for a 2-1 lead at 4:05 of the first quarter. The Lions responded with the next five goals for a 6-2 lead. Falcon goals by Edward Smet and Andres cut the LMU lead to 6-4 late in the second.
LMU scored the first three goals of the third quarter and held a 10-5 lead entering the fourth. The Falcons scored two in the fourth as Smet scored on a five-meter shot at 4:40 and then Samuel Fuller scored at 2:04.
Air Force outshot LMU, 31-26. LMU was 2-for-9 on the power play while AF was 0-for-9. Michael Miller won all four sprints. James Burke made six saves in 21 minutes while Anthony Tolbert made four saves in 11 minutes.
Burke was named to the all-tournament first team while Andres was named to the second team.
