Air Force men’s soccer fell to Grand Canyon, 0-1, Friday afternoon in the WAC semi-finals
Seattle, Wash. - Air Force was unable to match Grand Canyon's seventh-minute goal, falling one-nil, in the Western Athletic Conference tournament semi-finals. The 13th-ranked Falcons drop to 15-4 overall while GCU awaits the results between No. 2 UTRGV and No. 6 San Jose State.
Grand Canyon was the first to strike with early goal as an Air Force defenseman was tackled in the box, leaving a gap in the defense where GCU forward Marco Alfonso snuck through and capitalized on the 1-v-1 with Andrea Seazzu.
The Falcons upped the intensity in response, dominating the possessions and firing of 22 shots, nine on goal, by the end of regulation. Grand Canyon was only able to fire off six shots, two coming on frame, in the entire match. Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Tucker Bone, led the Falcons with six shots, three of which were on goal.
"We dominated the game with the exception of the sixth minute," said head coach Doug Hill. "The foul went unseen and it ended up hurting us. The team responded well and put on an aggressive attack. We had plenty of opportunities but needed to be a little more accurate on our shots. Credit to the GCU goalkeeper, he made a huge save on a great ball from the set piece and he kept them alive."
"I like the way we're playing," continued Hill. "We're a good team and I think we've proven that all season long. We're looking forward to the selection show on Monday and we're hoping to extend our season and represent the WAC in the national tournament. You never really know how those selections will go, but we feel good about how well we played all season."
Air Force's season hangs in the balance as they await the announcement for an at-large bid into the NCAA national tournament. The Falcons are ranked 22nd in the latest NCAA RPI Rankings. The NCAA Selection Show will air Monday, Nov. 12, prior to the first round of competition. First-round action commences, Nov. 15.
