LONG BEACH, Calif. -- An event title from senior Shelley Spires and a top collegiate finish from junior Kathryn Tomczak kicked off a busy weekend of competition for the Air Force track and field team this afternoon (April 19) at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach.
Spires earned a first-place finish in the high jump, as she cleared 5'11½" to better the 28-jumper field by more than an inch. With a season-high clearance of 13'9¼", Tomczak earned the top collegiate finish in the pole vault -- and finished second overall in the 40-jumper event. Tomczak was one of two Falcons to finish within the top-half of the pole vault standings, as classmate Jerni Self cleared 12'3½" to finish 20th.
Junior Logan Feasline recorded the highest placement of the day for the men, as he registered a career-best throw of 194'6" to finish fourth in the javelin. He was one of three Falcons to finish within the top half of the 14-thrower event, as freshman Parker Spearman and senior Luke Piper finished sixth (193'1") and seventh (192'11"), respectively.
Sophomore Connor Stevens cleared 16'7¼" to finish seventh out of 28 jumpers in the pole vault, while junior Sam Hinegardner posted a matching clearance to finish eighth. Hinegardner, who improved his career clearance in the pole vault by more than eight inches on the day, also placed within the top-half of the high jump after posting a height of 6'5½" to tie for ninth. Fellow junior Garrett Coalson also earned a placement within the top half of the overall standings, as he registered a season-best distance of 53'5 ¾" to finish 13th out of 38 throwers in the shot put.
Juniors David Collins and Micah Fontaine paced a small contingent of Falcons on the track this afternoon, as the pair accounted for top-10 finishes in the 110-meter hurdles. Under windy conditions on the straightaway at Jack Rose Track, Collins posted a time of 14.45 (3.4 m/s) to finish second in his heat and sixth in the overall field of 30, while Fontaine clocked a time of 14.53 (2.9 m/s) to place eighth.
The Falcons, who have two more races scheduled later tonight in the Distance Carnival events at Mt SAC and Azusa Pacific, return to Long Beach State tomorrow (April 20) for the start of the Beach Invitational. Air Force will also continue action at the Mt SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday.
