Air Force Opens Action at NCBA Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Air Force boxing team collected four victories this evening (April 5), as the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships got underway in West Point, N.Y. Overall, the Academy recorded a 6-4 record during the opening night of action at Ike Hall, as the women's club squad split their quarterfinal round with a 2-2 mark.
Seniors Osama Farqaleet and Den Tati-Mackaya bookended a night that included four victories for the men. Farqaleet earned a unanimous decision over Iowa State's Mohamed Qamar Farooq in the 125-pound quarterfinal, while Tati-Mackaya earned a 4-1 decision over Army West Point's Chris Bingham at 195 pounds. Sophomore Devon Smith and junior Levi Knox also accounted for Air Force victories, as Smith earned a 3-2 decision over Navy's Princeton Luong in the 156-pound bout and Knox claimed a 3-2 win at 165 pounds over Nevada's Nate Strother.
Sophomore Sean Chieves and junior Josh Turner also competed during tonight's quarterfinal round. Chieves dropped a 4-1 decision to Miami's Ryan Adelson at 132 pounds, while Turner suffered a 0-5 defeat to Penn State's Marquise Craig in the next weight division (139 pounds).
On the women's side, junior Laura Drapinski and freshman Alicia Alexander collected wins during tonight's quarterfinal round. Drapinski earned a 4-1 decision over Army West Point's Amira Mohamed at 119 pounds, while Alexander captured the unanimous decision over Ohio State's Bertine Xue at 125 pounds.
Two other members of the women's team also competed in tonight's opening round, but suffered 0-5 losses in their respective bouts. Junior Alex Reveles dropped a 112-pound decision to Navy's Sophie Lekas, while sophomore Abigail Aldecoa was decisioned by Washington's Linghong Schooch at 132 pounds.
The Falcons continue action at the NCBA Championships tomorrow (April 6) evening. The national semifinals are slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. (ET) inside Ike Hall at Army West Point.
