SACRAMENTO, Calif. â€" Backed by her second-highest clearance of the season, Air Force junior Kathryn Tomczak punched her ticket to the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this evening (May 26) at the West Preliminary in Sacramento.
Tomczak qualified to the national finals for the second-straight year after clearing the 13'8½" to finish 12th in the full 48-jumper field. The junior passed on the opening height of 12'4¾" and easily cleared the next bar (12'10¾") on her first try. After clearing 13'4½" on her third attempt, Tomczak advanced to the national meet after successfully breaking the 13'8½" bar on her third chance. As one of 12 vaulters to surpass that clearance, Tomczak secured her spot in the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Over the last two days, Air Force has seen a program-record three women advance to the final site of the NCAA Division I Championships (indoor or outdoor), as Tomczak joined classmate Jaci Smith (10,000-meter run) and senior Shelley Spires (high jump), who punched their tickets to Eugene yesterday.
On the men's side, senior Andrew Milliron capped his collegiate career with the fifth-fastest steeplechase time in Academy history (8:47.97). Milliron, who deleted nearly six seconds off of his previous time in that event to improve his No. 5 standing on the program's all-time list, finished seventh in his heat and 17th in the overall field of 48. In addition, junior Micah Fontaine competed in the opening round of the 110-meter hurdles this afternoon, clocking a time of 14.69 to finish 40th.
The Falcons close out the NCAA West Prelim tomorrow (May 25) with competition in seven events. Action begins at 12:00 p.m. (PST), with the West finals of the javelin throw.
