Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Colorado

USAFA, Colo – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team kicked off the 2018 season with a tough 3-0 loss to the University of Colorado Thursday evening, August 16, at the Cadet Soccer Stadium.

The Falcons (0-1) fended off a high powered CU (1-0) attack as best they could, as senior goalie Jennifer Hiddink recorded six saves on the night.

"Great game tonight by Jen, she came up with some big saves that kept us in the game," head coach Larry Friend remarked.

The Falcon offense recorded four shots of their own, with three finding their way on net. Freshman Mackenzie Kimmel had two of the shots in her first career Falcon cap.

"Quite a few of our freshmen got quality minutes out there," Friend continued. "It gave them a chance to get their first experience at the college level. There was also some great leadership from our upperclassmen to help them through their first match."

The first half began with a big time save from Hiddink in the eighth minute. Colorado kept the pressure on, however, and netted the game's first goal two minutes later on a free ball off a corner kick to make it 1-0 early on. From there, there was not a ton of pressure from either side, as Air Force attempted a pair of shots on net to no avail. After one half of play, CU led 1-0.

The second half started sluggish for both sides, as there was not a single shot until ten minutes in. Hiddink then fended off a pair of opportunities before Colorado finally broke through for goal number two at the 70^th minute. From there, Air Force had a few opportunities, but were not able to capitalize. Meanwhile, CU scored the third and final goal right at the tail end of the match to seal the 3-0 defeat.

Air Force will return to the pitch, Sunday, August 19, for game two of the Colorado Cup against the University of Northern Colorado. Kickoff against the in-state rival Bears in Boulder is set for 1:15 p.m.
