Dewing and Parker record a goal apiece, Air Force Men’s Soccer extends to three-straight road wins
The Falcons and Retrievers were scoreless through the first half, marking the Air Force's third-straight match with a nil-nil first half. True to form, the Falcons continued a three-game streak of outshooting their opponents in the opening 45 minutes, taking over three times more first period shots than UMBC (11-3).
Air Force continue to put the pressure on the UMBC cage, attacking with power and precision, cutting behind the opponents' defensive line with creative offense. The Falcons lit the board in the 52nd minute as Luis Martinez connected with Austin Dewing to break the tie. The Falcons continued to display offensive pressure and defensive dominance by keeping the ball on their half of the field for the majority of the period. In the 73rd minute, Austin Guerrero connected with Klint Parker for Air Force's second goal of the match. It was the second-straight game that Air Force put up two goals while blanking their opponents.
At the final whistle, the Falcons took twice as many shots as the Retrievers, 20-10. Parker and Danny Han led the squad with four shots apiece with four of Parker's coming on frame. The Air Force defense is firing on all cylinders, posting their third-straight shutout over three stout opponents. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Seazzu is proving to be a brick wall for opponents, notching three saves while posting his third shutout this season. He has eight shutouts in 10 career appearances with the assistance of the Falcons' superior defensive line.
"It was a great team win over a feisty opponent," said head coach Doug Hill. "Our offense and defense played the kind of soccer we aim to play; a solid back line and attractive attacking offense."
"Seazzu and the back line played an outstanding match," continued Hill. "In addition to the shutout defense, our offense scored great goals and I think we could have gotten more given the way we were playing. Getting ahead of your opponents gives you some cushion so we're getting our younger guys some experience with these leads. Overall I'm happy with the victory and I think we're prepared to continue our winning ways leading into our home stretch."
Air Force opens the home slate with a pair of matches against North Florida and Colgate, Fri., Sept. 7 at 7 p.m., and Sun., Sept. 9 at 1 p.m., respectively. The meeting with North Florida marks the first time that the teams will meet. The match against Colgate marks the second meeting between the teams. The last time Air Force played Colgate was in the 2015 campaign where the Falcons fell, 2-3, on the road.
