Falcons Wrap Up Opening Night of Friday Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force boxing team kicked off the 2018-19 campaign this evening (Sept. 21), as a strong mix of veterans and newcomers took to the ring for Friday Night Fights. Following a 10-bout card, with contests ranging from 122 pounds to the heavyweight division, freshman Lawrence Barrett was selected as the Academy's Boxer of the Week.

"It was a great first night of bouts," head coach Blake Baldi said. "I was really pleased with the way the new guys competed."

Barrett kicked off his collegiate career with a 122-pound decision over classmate Ryan Dinndorf. Barrett was one of four first-time boxers to claim victorious decisions on the night, while four others made their boxing debuts. Fellow freshman Francisco Garcia earned a 158-pound victory over classmate Ayaz Mustafa in his first bout, while sophomore Luke Kilianski and senior Kehinde Osinloye – both competing in their first contests – earned decisions in the 180-pound (over freshman Fabian Manzo) and heavyweight (over junior newcomer Micah Mackaly) bouts.

Several returning members of the team also stepped into the ring this evening. Sophomore Justin Couty defeated classmate William Winstead IV in a 148-pound contest between members of Cadet Squadron 04, while juniors Ife Onigbanjo (149 pounds, Sean Chieves), Levi Rate (162 pounds, William Ragland) and Austin Dreyer (195 pounds, Nick Pingel) earned victories over their classmates. Juniors Levi Knox (184 pounds) and Cenada Clifton-Smith (176 pounds) rounded out the night's results with victories over their respective senior counterparts, Deon Dodd and Isaiah Honable.

Air Force returns to the Cadet Gym Boxing Room on Friday, Oct. 5, when they host service academy rival Navy in the annual showdown at 4:30 p.m. (MT).
