ABOUT AMY SVOBODA
The Falcons' annual home tournament is named after Amy Svoboda, a 1989 Academy graduate and four-year letterwinner on the Air Force volleyball team, who was killed during an A-10 training accident in 1997. Svoboda, who earned MVP honors during her senior season with the Falcons, was one of the first 14 female fighter pilots in the Air Force – and one of the first six to fly the A-10.
DID YOU KNOW?
Of the program's first 12 non-conference opponents, the Falcons had only faced three teams (UT Arlington, McNeese State, CSU Bakersfield) prior to this season and held a 2-1 against those programs at the DI level.
HISTORY 101
Although Air Force has only faced CSU Bakersfield once before at the Division I level – a 3-0 home victory for the Falcons in 2012 – the two schools met seven times during their days in Division II. The Falcons, who served as host for six of the seven contests, maintain a 5-2 record over the Roadrunners at that level.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CSU Bakersfield (2-4) is coming off of a 1-2 weekend at the UC Irvine Tournament, where it defeated the host Anteaters in five and dropped 3-0 decisions to Texas Tech and Georgia. Valparaiso, which will face #20 Michigan prior to making the trip to Colorado, is currently 6-1 after sweeping the Chippewa Invitational with victories over De Paul (3-0), La Salle (3-0) and Central Michigan (3-1). Cal Baptist, which is also 6-1, is coming off of 2-1 weekend at the Fresno State Invitational (3-2 American; 1-3 Saint Mary's; 3-1 San Francisco) and Presbyterian is 1-4 on the year, having split contests with Jacksonville (3-0) and Kennesaw State (1-3) on Friday. CSUB is 1-0 against common Air Force opponents (3-2 San Diego State), while Valparaiso is 0-1 against upcoming Air Force opponents (2-3 Fresno State).
WHAT'S ON DECK
Air Force remains at Cadet East Gym next weekend for its final three non-conference contests of the year. The Falcons will host Maryland Eastern Shore and Samford on Friday, Sept. 14, before welcoming service academy rival Navy to the Academy for the first time in 13 years on Saturday, Sept. 15.
