In what is regarded as the biggest win in program history, Air Force women's tennis defeated Big Ten Conference foe Nebraska 4-3 on Saturday at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb. The Falcons improved to 2-0 on the season and dropping the Huskers to 0-1.
The Falcons earned the point in doubles with wins by TJ Fumagalli and Kristin Kerrigan over Shinde/Aragon 6-4 and Elizabeth Barnickel and Nadeen Lieberman over Cozac/Gould 6-2. Fumagalli and Kerrigan rallied back from a 4-0 deficit to earn the win.
The Falcons split the singles competition 3-3. Air Force earned wins at the one, four and six slots. Fumagalli won the No. 1 singles in straight sets over Vasanti Shinde 6-1, 6-4. Kerrigan won the No. 4 singles over Hayley Haakenstad in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and Nadeen Lieberman won the Nov. 6 singles over Jeannie Lozowski in a thrilling three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to claim the win for the Falcons.
"This has been a long time coming," Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "The team had to fight for every win. Nadeen closing out the match for the win was a great moment. She was out all of last season with an injury and she came back to clinch the match. Mentally, Nadeen stayed focused and hit two big first serves to win the match. This was a 1,000 percent a total team effort, including great coaching by assistant coach Andrew Veeder."
Air Force wraps up three days of competition in Nebraska tomorrow, taking on Creighton.
