Air Force women's tennis completed an undefeated weekend with a 7-0 sweep against Creighton Sunday morning at the Dillon Tennis Center at the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln, Neb. The Falcons went 3-0 in their Spring-opening Nebraska trip, which included its first-ever win over a Big Ten opponent in Nebraska Saturday.
The Falcons swept the singles portion of competition and rallied back to earn the doubles point by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.
Air Force was simply dominant in singles, winning all six matches in two sets. TJ Fumagalli set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ashley Ishimura. Elizabeth Barnickel then claimed the No. 2 singles with 6-0, 6-3 over Sarah Wilcox. At the No. 3 slot, Meredith Jones won 6-2, 6-4 against Michaela Henne.
Kristin Kerrigan kept the momentum going for the Falcons with a win at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-0, over Erin Epperson. Ashleigh Harvey nearly had a perfect win at No. 5, defeating Claire Embree 6-0, 6-1. Nadeen Lieberman rounded out the singles sweep at No. 6, beating Gabby O'Conner 6-4, 7-5.
In the doubles, the Falcons No. 1 duo of Fumagalli and Kerrigan suffered a rare 6-3 setback to Ishimura/Wilcox. The duo of Harvey and Jones tied it up at No. 2 doubles with a dominant 6-0 win over Henne/O'Connor. Barnickel and Lieberman completed the doubles rally with a 7-5 win over Embree/Epperson.
"Today was a great way to end a tough three-day weekend on the road," Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "For the third consecutive day, our doubles teams found themselves in a hole and managed to come from behind to clinch the doubles point. With a quick win at No. 2 by Harvey & Jones, our No. 1 group of Fumagalli and Kerrigan fell. Our No. 3 doubles group of Barnickel and Lieberman were down 5-1 before rallying to score seven straight games to secure the doubles point. This type of fight and discipline shows just how tough our team is."
"It was impressive that our singles did not lose a set," Gidley added. "To come away with road wins over Big Ten and Big East programs was a huge accomplishment and show the upward direction the program is headed."
Air Force returns to competition next weekend with three home contests. First up is Northern Colorado on Friday, Jan. 25. The Falcons then host Colorado and Montana State on Saturday, Jan. 26.
