A big second half on both sides of the ball helped lift Air Force football (4-2, 2-1 MW) past Fresno State (2-3, 0-1 MW), 43-24, in a Mountain West contest Saturday night at Falcon Stadium.
Trailing 24-22 at the half, the Falcons turned on the afterburners in the second-half, out-scoring the Bulldogs 21-0 to roll to the win.
The Air Force defense clamped down, holding Fresno State to just 25 yards of total offense in the second half. The offense did its job, holding the ball for 24:25 in the second half, as opposed to just 5:35 for the Bulldogs.
The Falcons racked up 340 yards rushing on the ground with the fullback tandem of Timothy Jackson and Taven Birdow and tailback Kadin Remsberg doing much of the damage. Jackson ran for a game and career-high 117 yards on 20 carries, adding a touchdown. Birdow rushed for 73 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Remsberg added 89 yards on 11 carries.
Quarterback Donald Hammond III added two rushing touchdowns on the night. Hammond was an efficient 2 of 3 passing for 81 yards. The junior tossed one touchdown, a 53-yard strike to receiver Ben Waters for the Falcons' first score.
The offenses for both teams could not be stopped in the first half, with scores on every possession until Air Force kneeled to end the half. The two teams traded touchdowns on the first six drives, until Fresno State kicked a field goal on its fourth possession to take a 24-22 halftime lead. Both teams did not punt in the first half.
Air Force took the lead in the third quarter as Birdow ran one in from three yards out to give the Falcons a 29-24 lead early in the third quarter.
The Falcons padded the lead with a Hammond TD run that capped a 13-play, 79-yard drive that took seven minutes and thirty three seconds. Air Force added an insurance touchdown when linebacker Kyle Johnson intercepted Fresno State quarterback Jorge Reyna and ran it back for a 24-yard pick-six with 12:22 to play in the fourth.
Air Force held Fresno State to 268 yards of total offense. Reyna led the Bulldogs with 209 yards passing and two touchdown passes.
Air Force returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 19, at Hawai'i. Kickoff is 9 pm MT/5 pm HT.
