
Former Falcon Alonzo Babers Selected to Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

The two-time Olympic Gold Medalist will be a part of the hall's Class of 2020.
DENVER, Colo. – Alonzo Babers, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former standout on the Air Force track and field team, will be inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, as a member of the Class of 2020, the hall's selection committee announced yesterday.
Babers, a 1983 Academy graduate, claimed two Olympic gold medals at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, winning the 400-meter dash in 44.27 and running on the 4x400-meter relay that finish first with a time of 2:57.91. A two-time NCAA All-American and 1983 track and field MVP, Babers still holds the Academy records in the 400-meter dash, 300-yard dash and 500-meter dash. A member of the Air Force Athletic Department's inaugural Hall of Fame Class in 2007, Babers began pilot training one month after the Olympics and was on active duty in the Air Force until 1991.
He is one of six inductees into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2020. He will be inducted alongside Bob Gebhard, the first GM of the Colorado Rockies; George Gwozdecky, the head coach of two NCAA championship hockey teams at the University of Denver; Terry Miller, a Mitchell High School graduate who is regarded as one of the top running backs ever from the state of Colorado; Erin Popovich, a CSU graduate who claimed 14 gold medals at three Paralympic Games; and Lindsey Vonn, the winningest women's World Cup skier of all time with 82 titles.
The 56th-annual banquet will be held in Denver on April 23, 2020.
