Devon Smith was named the Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament.
DETROIT, Mich. – The Air Force boxing team captured the team title Chuck Davey Invitational this evening (Oct. 25) in Detroit, as it defeated service academy rivals Army West Point and Navy at the historic Detroit Athletic Club. Senior Devon Smith was named the Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament for his knockout victory at 156 pounds.
Air Force posted a 4-2 record against its service academy counterparts on Friday night, edging Army West Point (4-2) for the team title with a 2-1 record in head-to-head competition. Navy rounded out the three-team event with a 1-5 mark.
Smith came out strong in his 156-pound bout with Navy's Jack Jeon – a rematch from Air Force's dual at Navy in early October. Smith applied solid pressure to his Midshipmen counterpart in the opening round and landed several hard shots that eventually decided the bout in the second, as he forced the referee to administer two standing-eight counts to Jeon and ultimately stop the contest before the second bell.
Tyler Dalzell also earned a victory in the 156-pound weight class, as he earned the judges' vote in his 156-pound bout with Navy's Pat Giambruno. The win was the first collegiate decision for the freshman, who was competing in his first bout outside of the Academy's intersquad rounds of Friday Night Fights.
Seniors Sean Chieves and Levi Rate rounded out the Falcons' list of champions at the DAC on Friday night, as they claimed victories over a pair of contenders from Army West Point. Chieves earned the first win of the night for Air Force, as he decisioned Shane Ferry in a 144-pound bout, and Rate secured the Falcons' team title with a 165-pound decision over Kyle Taylor.
Sophomore Lawrence Barrett and senior Cenada Clifton-Smith also competed at the Detroit Athletic Club on Friday night, with Barrett boxing at 125 pounds (Navy's Jake Clary) and Clifton-Smith competing in the 173-pound contest (Army West Point's Adrian Alba).
The Falcons will face Army West Point again next Friday (Nov. 1), when the Black Knights travel to the Academy for the annual showdown between the two programs. Action is slated to get underway at 4:30 p.m. (MT) inside the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
