USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force boxing team claimed a 7-6 victory over Army West Point this evening (Nov. 1), as the two programs met in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room for the annual showdown between the two service academies. The men posted a 6-2 record during the competition, while the women finished 1-4. Sophomores Maksat Omar and Maddie Lloyd captured the team's Boxer of the Week award.
Omar capped the night – and secured the Falcons' victory – with a decision over Aung Moe in the 138-pound bout. He was one of five Falcons to earn victories by decision on Friday, while senior Micah Mackaly rounded out Air Force's list of champions by forcing the referee to stop his heavyweight bout with Joren Dawson in the second round. Sophomore Zach Phillips decisioned Will Nauman at 150 pounds, while sophomore Ayaz Mustafa (Ezkiel Mercado) and senior Devon Smith (Lawrence Shepherd) both claimed decisions at 156 pounds. Freshman Walker Morris picked up a victory in his first showdown, as he decisioned Devan Greenfield at 178 pounds.
Junior Justin Couty and senior Cenada Clifton-Smith also competed today, falling to their counterparts from West Point. Couty fell by referee stoppage (third round) in his 142-pound bout with Isiah Queen, while Clifton-Smith dropped a 175-pound decision to Manny Ahoua.
Lloyd captured a title for the women, decisioning Leandra Ramos at 142 pounds. Four other Falcons also competed in the annual service academy showdown. Freshman Corrina Swift and junior Shay Stayton dropped decisions in the 118-pound (Menna Mohammed) and 122-pound (Leija Cobb) bouts, while the referee stopped sophomore Isabel Eicher's 152-pound bout with Eba Obiomon in the first round. Fellow sophomore Ymani Nesmith rounded out the women's bout, falling to Sidney Sanburg at 170 pounds.
