The 56 game schedule includes 25 games at Falcon Field
USAFA, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy baseball team and Head Coach Mike Kazlausky announced its 2020 schedule. Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Falcons will play a 56 game slate, which includes 25 games at home at Falcon Field, as well as 35 non-conference games as the Mountain West Conference moves to a 21 game schedule.
"The Air Force Academy baseball team is excited about our 2020 spring schedule," Kazlausky exclaimed. "I try to put together a schedule that will allow us to travel to the Midwest, as well as the East and West coast to be able to compete. On our roster, our cadets come from all over the country, and we have a national brand."
"We have 25 home games scheduled for this year and 31 games on the road," Kazlausky continued. "Our Cadets understand that they need to learn how to win on the road, because after graduation the games that will be played will be on our enemies home field and that game will no longer be a game, as it will be war. We learn a lot through sport in regards to adversity, stress, pressure, teamwork, and working as a cohesive unit, which will be important as we graduate leaders of character that are ready to fight for the greatest country in the world."
Air Force's first 14 games of the season will be played on the road as the Falcons begin in the Sunshine State with games in DeLand, Fla. against host Stetson, as well as Manhattan, Feb. 14-16. AF's first game will be against the Jaspers, as they play two against both them and the host Hatters.
The following weekend it is back to the east with the annual Freedom Classic, where the Falcons will square off with Service Academy rival, Navy, in Kinston, N.C. Feb. 21-23. The three-game set will be played at historic Grainger Stadium, home of the Class A-Advanced Down East Wood Ducks, whose MLB parent club are the Texas Rangers. The day after that series concludes, AF will face off with 2019 Super Regional Participant Duke University, Monday, Feb. 24.
Air Force will remain in North Carolina the following weekend, Feb. 28-March 1, when they head to Fayetteville, N.C. to face both Campbell for two games, as well as Army West Point for two games, as part of the Armed Forces Invitational. Both teams made the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The games will be played at Segra Stadium, home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers who are the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros. The 14 game road swing to open the season concludes with a two-game midweek set against Wichita State, March 3-4, in Kansas.
From there, Air Force opens its home slate at Falcon Field with a non-conference weekend series with South Dakota State, March 6-8. Air Force will also host non-conference weekend series with Minnesota, March 13-15, and Miami University, March 27-29. The home midweek schedule includes Nebraska, March 24 and 25, New Mexico State, March 30, and Northern Colorado, April 28.
The remaining non-conference road games include two midweeks with Utah Valley in Orem, March 10 and 11, a weekend series with Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind., March 20-22, two midweek games against Kansas, April 14 and 15, and a final game in Greely against UNC, April 21.
For Mountain West Conference play, the addition of Boise State for the 2020 season gives the league eight members, meaning the conference slate has been amended to one series against each team. Because of this, conference play does not start until April. Air Force will host four teams for weekend series, while hitting the road for three of them.
The Falcons get newly added BSU to open the MW Conference schedule, April 3-5. AF will also host San Jose State, April 17-19, New Mexico, April 24-26, and the defending conference champions Fresno State, May 8-10. The road series will then come against UNLV, April 9-11, San Diego State, May 1-3, and Nevada to conclude the regular season, May 14-16.
Finally, the 2020 Mountain West Baseball Tournament will take place May 21-24 at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the San Diego State campus. The same tournament format remains, with the top four teams clinching a spot for a chance at the title.
"To quote General Douglas MacArthur, 'On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days and other fields will bear the fruits of victory,' Kazlausky concluded. "At the end of the day, our job is to ensure that our Cadets are not only representing our team on the 'friendly fields of strife,' but more importantly representing our nation as warfighters. Fly, Fight, Win!"
