BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Air Force scored four goals in the second period and held off Sacred Heart for a 4-3 win in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Saturday, Nov. 2, at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.
After a scoreless first period, the teams erupted for six combined goals in the second. The Falcons drew first blood as Shawn Knowlton scored his first career goal at 2:26 of the second period from Matt Pulver. The lead was the first for Air Force since the season opener at Notre Dame. The lead was short-lived as the Pioneers scored on the rush at 3:12 when Max Luuko scored his first of the season. The Falcons then scored three straight goals for a 4-1 lead. Two minutes after the Pioneers tied the game, Air Force answered. Pulver snapped a wrister from the right circle for his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 5:46. Senior Brady Tomlak gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead at 8:11 from Trevor Stone and Max Harper. After the Falcons won an offensive zone faceoff, Stone made a short pass in traffic to Tomlak who scored his third of the season. Air Force took a 4-1 lead with 7:06 left in the second period. Zach Mirageas came out of the penalty box and collected a loose puck in the neutral zone. After splitting two Pioneers, Mirageas scored on a breakaway for his first of the season. Late in the period, the Pioneers cut the Falcon lead to 4-2 when Vito Bavaro scored on a breakaway with 4:14 left.
Late in the third period, SHU cut the Falcon lead to 4-3 with 6:59 left as Austin McIllmurray scored on the power play. The Pioneers pulled the goalie with 1:36 left, but were unable to tie the game.
Air Force sophomore Alex Schilling, making his first career collegiate start, made 21 saves in the game. Josh Benson made 19 for the Pioneers. SHU outshot the Falcons, 24-23, in the game. SHU was 1-for-6 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-6.
"The boys bounced back well after last night's game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Sacred Heart is a good team. We were better tonight and were a harder team to play against. Alex Schilling played well in his first start and it was nice to see him get his first win. Sacred Heart has a history of pulling the goalie and breaking our hearts, but we persevered today. A team with less substance could have lost that game, but we hung in there, showed some poise and got a much-needed win."
Air Force (1-7-0, 1-3-0 AHA) returns home for a two-game league series against Bentley, Nov. 8-9, at 7:05 pm each night at Cadet Ice Arena.
