Air Force Drops 3-0 Decision to Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Air Force volleyball team closed out a four-match road swing this afternoon (Nov. 2) with a three-set loss to Wyoming at the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie. Senior Denise Ssozi and sophomore Bailey Keith combined for 16 of the team's 30 kills, as the Falcons fell in straight 25-12, 25-13, 25-19 sets to the host Cowgirls.
Ssozi tied for the match lead with nine kills and posted a team-high 13 digs, while Keith added seven strikes and tied with junior Cambria Galloway for the team lead in blocks (two). Junior Alex King posted the squad's only service ace and junior Andi Ahlers dished out a team-high 15 assists.
Galloway and freshman Taleah Cooper accounted for match-opening kills, but the Cowgirls used a 6-1 run to double up the Falcons by a 10-5 advantage. A pair of strikes from Ssozi bookended back-to-back solo blocks from Keith and the senior, as Air Force cut its deficit to three (8-11). Wyoming responded with 10 of the next 11 points and took a 21-9 lead, before sophomore Vittoria Juarez stopped the run with a kill. Galloway added one more kill, but the Cowgirls scored the final four points for the 25-12 victory.
Ahlers, Keith and junior Mackenzie Robertson tallied kills in the opening moments of the second set, but Wyoming jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Freshman Sarah Markwardt and Ssozi put down scores to pull the Falcons within four (7-11), while additional kills from Keith, Ssozi and Markwardt kept Air Force within five (11-16). Wyoming closed the set on a 9-2 run to take the second set by a 25-13 margin.
Robertson struck first in the third, while kills from Keith and freshman Mackenzie Kummer helped Air Force take a 4-2 lead. Wyoming tied the set at five, but back-to-back scores from Keith and Ssozi helped the Falcons retake a two-point lead (8-6). The Cowgirls responded and retook the lead at 9-8, before pushing their own lead to two (10-8). A kill from Ssozi brought Air Force within one and sparked an 8-2 run by the Falcons that gave them the 16-12 lead. Keith and Ahlers tallied kills during the stretch, while both teamed up with Galloway for two separate blocks. Wyoming pulled within one (16-15) and the teams traded the next several points, with Keith (18-17) and Robertson (19-18) tallying kills that kept Air Force in the lead. However, Wyoming tied the set on the next point and scored the final seven points to complete the sweep with the 25-19 victory.
After being away from the Academy for the last two weeks, the Falcons return home next week to host San Jose State (Thursday, Nov. 7) and Nevada (Saturday, Nov. 9) at the Cadet East Gym.
