
Men's Swimming & Diving Concludes Day One of Art Adamson Invite

Sophomore Corey Shepard qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 50 free
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team wrapped up action at the Art Adamson Invitational, Thursday evening, Nov. 21, on the campus of Texas A&M University. The Falcons competed in six events, and had some big highlights overall.
As a team, AF has accumulated 111 points, good for fifth place in a loaded field.
Starting off the day with prelims, the swimming prelims were swam in long course, making them qualifiers for the U.S Olympic Trials in 2020. In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Corey Shepard raced to a 23.09 50 meter time, placing him third overall and getting him a qualifying time for the 2020 Olympic Trials. Also in that prelim, sophomore Matthew Lattin placed sixth with a 23.33, behind the 23.19 needed for qualification. Both subsequently qualified for the A final later that day.
In the A final, Lattin raced to a sixth place finish in the 50 yard with a 20.10, while Shepard was right behind with a 20.17, taking seventh. Both swims were NCAA B cuts, while Shepard's was tied for the ninth-fastest 50 time in program history.
In the 200 IM, sophomore Isaac Gwin qualified for the A final after taking eighth in the long course. In the finals, Gwin raced to a sixth place finish with a 1:48.08, good for an NCAA B cut. Senior Zach Nelson qualified for the B final in the prelims, but swam a faster finals time, as he clocked in with a 1:47.91, placing him second in the B final and 10th overall. His time was also an NCAA B cut time.
The final individual swim came in the 400 freestyle, and freshman Jaykob Williams was Air Force's top finisher, placing 14th overall. Finally, in the two relays contested, the 200 free and 400 medley, both AF squads raced to season-best times.
Day two of the Art Adamson Invite continues tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 22 with eight more events. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. MT, with finals at 5 p.m. MT.
