Three Swimmers Set Olympic Trials Qualifying Times on Day Two of Art Adamson Invite

The Falcons also had a handful of top ten program times
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team ramped up the action on day two of the Art Adamson Invitational, Friday evening, Nov. 22, on the campus of Texas A&M University. The Falcons competed in eight events, and had three more 2020 Olympic Trials qualifiers, as well as a handful of new top-ten program times.
Starting off the day with prelims, they were once again swam in long course, making them qualifiers for the U.S Olympic Trials in 2020. In the 100 breast, senior Zach Nelson swam to a 1:03.27 to clinch a qualifying time. Then in the 100 back, sophomore Isaac Gwin and senior Cole McAnany both swam to qualifying times, as Gwin touched in at 55.65, and McAnany was right behind with a 56.31. All three, along with sophomore Adam Grimm in the 400 IM, claimed spots in their A finals later in the evening.
The finals of each event went back to the NCAA distances, setting up AF to try and go for some top program times. In the 400 IM, Grimm placed fifth overall with a 3:54.38, which improved on his eighth-best time in program history. Sophomore Logan Davis won the B final, taking ninth overall with a 3:55.28, which improved on his 10th best time in program history.
In the 100 fly, sophomores Aaron Pang and Matthew Lattin took third and fourth, respectively, in the B final, good for 11th and 12gh overall. Pang clocked in with a 48.16, while Lattin had a 48.51, which is good for the 10th best time in Academy history.
After achieving Olympic Qualifier times in the prelims, Nelson, Gwin, and McAnany went back to NCAA distance and continued to thrive. Nelson in the 100 breast clocked in with a 53.82, good for sixth place and an NCAA B cut. In the 100 back, Gwin ended up in 2nd with a 47.11, a B cut, while McAnany placed fourth with a 48.04.
In the final individual event of the day, freshman Wen Zhang clocked in with a third place finish in the B final of the 200 free, good for 11th overall. On the diving board, junior Cole Armagost was the top AF finisher in the 1-meter, taking 10th. Finally, in the two relays, AF clocked in with a season-best time in the 200 medley, while they took seventh in the 800 free relay in their first time racing the event this season.
As a team, AF is now up to 328 points to remain in fifth place.
The Art Adamson Invite concludes tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 23 with seven more events. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. MT, with finals at 5 p.m. MT.
