The sophomore captured two event titles at the season-opening meet on Dec. 6.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following an impressive collegiate debut at the Air Force Holiday Open on Dec. 6, sophomore newcomer Charles Dimnwaobi was selected as the season's first Mountain West Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon (Dec. 17). The award, which encompasses all conference meets during the month of December, marked the third time in four years that an Air Force sprinter has earned the men's first weekly MW track honor of the season.
In his first collegiate event, Dimnwaobi registered the second-fastest time in Academy history to easily win the 60-meter dash. Posting a time of 6.72 – a mark just 0.02 seconds off of the Academy record, Dimnwaobi bettered the 46-sprinter field by 0.12 seconds. His time also accounted for a new Sophomore Class Record at the Academy, improving on a mark that had stood since 1998. The 60-meter win was one of two victories for the sophomore on Dec. 6, as he also clocked a time of 34.51 – a mark just shy of the program record in that non-traditional race – to win the 300-meter dash by 0.51 seconds.
Following two full weekends of indoor competition, Dimnwaobi's conference-leading 60-meter time of 6.72 is tied for sixth in the NCAA, while his 300-meter mark of 34.51 is listed among the nation's top 30.
The Falcons return to action on Jan. 10-11, when they head to Boulder for the annual Potts Invitational.
