USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's tennis defeated both Abilene Christian and Stetson in a pair of duals Saturday afternoon at the indoor tennis courts at Cadet Gym. The Falcons are now 10-0 on the season for the first time ever in the Div. I era.
In the morning match, Air Force rolled to a 6-1 win over Abilene Christian.
The Falcons claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles Meredith Jones and Ashleigh Harvey won 6-2 over Bellow/Morrida at No 2. Elizabeth Barnickel and Nadeen Lieberman won at No. 3 over Henry/Stewart 6-4.
The Falcons went 5-1 in singles. TJ Fumagalli won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2 over Sarah Adams. Barnickel won at No. 2 singles over Nini Memishishi 6-4, 6-2. After a setback at No. 3 singles, Kristin Kerrigan won at No. 4 over Jordan Henry 7-5, 6-3. Ashleigh Harvey won at No. 5 over Allison Stewart 6-2, 6-0. Nadeen Lieberman won at No. 6 over Ileana Mocciola 6-3, 6-2.
In the evening watch, the Falcons won 7-0 over Stetson.
Fumagalli and Kerrigan won at No. 1 singles 6-1 over Renault/Ashirova. Barnickel and Lieberman won at No. 3 over Viaud/Horwitz to get the doubles point.
The Falcons then swept the singles, winning all six matches in two sets. Fumagalli won at No. 1 over Danel Ashirova 6-1, 6-2. Barnickel won at No. 2 over Lucie Renault 6-0, 6-1. Jones won at No. 3 over Booke Milner 6-2, 6-2. Kerrigan won at No. 4 over Vicky Geurinckx 6-2, 6-2. Harvey won at No. 5 over Alexe Viaud 6-5, 7-5. Lieberman won at No. 6 over Megan Horwitz 6-1, 6-0.
"This is the first Divi. I USAFA team to be 10 -0 in school history," Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "Playing for the fourth week in a row, and a doubleheader on that, I was not sure how this team would handle it. We played a very tough Abilene Christian opponent in our first match of the day. They always have tough doubles, so that was positive to see how our team would respond. It was great that our sophomore doubles team of Harvey and Jones set the tone with a quick win to help us earn the doubles point. We have three great doubles teams this year, so it is fun to see who is going to take care of business first. Winning the doubles point gave our players some confidence going into the singles. We have yet to lose the doubles point in all of our 10 matches. We work on doubles during our practices and it shows when we compete. To win 6-1 against a strong opponent just shows the depth of this team in singles too. Later in the evening, we played against Stetson University. This was a match that our players never let their opponents in, which you like to see as a coach."
Air Force returns to competition Feb. 14 at Florida A&M.
