
New School Record Highlights Day Three at WAC S&D Championships

Air Force sits in second place heading into the final day
HOUSTON, Texas – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team had its best day yet on day three of the Western Athletic Conference Championships, Friday evening, March 1, at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.
The Falcons had two runner-up finishes, while seven individual swims were in the top eight of their event. In addition, a new school record was set, while five other swims found the Academy top 10. As a team, the Falcons sit in second place with 418 points. They are behind only Grand Canyon (472).
Freshman Isaac Gwin had the biggest day for Air Force, as he set the new Academy record in the 100 back with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 46.78. He broke the record set by Devon Davis set back in 2016 (47.09). Not too far behind Gwin in the event was junior Cole McAnany, as he touched in fourth place with a 47.98.
The other runner-up finish came from junior Zach Nelson in the 100 breast, as he clocked in with a 53.54, which was good for the third-fastest time in program history, as well as an NCAA 'B' cut. In the 'B' final of the 100 breast, fellow junior Andrew Weiss won the heat with a 54.99, which moved him up to the eighth fastest in program history.
Air Force's most placers in an event came in the 400 IM, as they had four place within the top eight. Leading the charge was sophomore Peter Lochmaier, who took bronze with a 3:52.53. Behind him were three freshmen, as Adam Grimm, Logan Davis, and Wyatt Foote placed fourth, sixth, and eighth, respectively. Grimm's time of 3:54.42 was the seventh fastest in program history, while Davis' 3:55.87 is tied for the ninth quickest.
In the 100 fly, another freshman found the top eight, as Aaron Pang raced to an eighth place finish with a 48.20. His prelim time of 47.80 was good for the fifth best in Academy history. The final individual event was the 200 freestyle, where the top AF finisher was freshman Corey Shepard, as he took 10th with a 1:38.71.
The final event contested on the day was the 400 medley relay, where AF had another top three finish, taking third with a 3:11.70, by far the fastest time of the season for the squad of Gwin, Nelson, Pang, and freshman Matthew Lattin.
The last day of the 2019 WAC Championships comes tomorrow, March 2, with the final seven events. AF will compete in the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay, and platform dives.
