Women’s Tennis Claims MW Mountain Co-Championship Despite Setback

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Despite a 4-1 setback to New Mexico in the home finale, Air Force women's tennis claimed its first-ever Mountain West title, earning MW Mountain Division Co-Champion honors Friday afternoon at the outdoor tennis courts. The Falcons capped the regular season with a 21-2 overall and 4-1 MW record.

The Falcons settle for a tie with New Mexico and Wyoming, who both finished 4-1 in conference play.

The loss snapped a six match winning streak for the Falcons.

Air Force was unable to earn the win despite starting out strong by winning the doubles point. The Lobos were able to win four consecutive singles matches to earn the win. The Falcons held one-set leads in both singles matches that were not completed.

Win at No. 1 and 3 doubles put the Falcons ahead 1-0 early on. TJ Fumagalli and Kristen Kerrigan defeated Polly Chen/Danielle Quevedo 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Elizabeth Barnickel and Nadeen Lieberman defeated Ruth Copas/Albie Huang 6-3 to earn the point.

New Mexico rallied in singles winning the 2-5 singles matches. Barnickel fell at No. 2 to Bronte Murgett 6-1, 6-2. Meredith Jones fell at No. 3 to Huang 6-3, 6-3. Kerrigan fell at No. 4 to Quevedo 7-5, 6-1. New Mexico won the match when Ashleigh Harvey lost at No. 5 to Natasha Munday 6-4, 6-4.

Air Force honored its two seniors as part of senior day. Seniors Elizabeth Barnickel and Meredith Laskey comprise the graduating class of 2019.

Air Force now awaits its seeding for the 2019 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championships, which takes place April 24-28 in San Diego, Calif.
