Air Force Opens Action at NCBA Championships

The Falcons claimed four victories during the quarterfinal round of NCBA action.
RENO, Nev. – The Air Force boxing team collected four quarterfinal victories this evening (April 4), as it opened competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships in Reno. A total of nine Falcons stepped into the ring during the opening night of national competition.
Freshman Lawrence Barrett earned a victory in his first national bout, as he took a 125-pound decision from Miami's Jack Cross. A trio of juniors also advanced to the second round of competition after recording quarterfinal victories tonight. Sean Chieves decisioned Mario Estanislao of UC Davis at 132 pounds, Devon Smith won his 147-pound bout with West Virginia's Tyler Sosa and Levi Rate defeated San Jose State's Marquest Anderson in a 156-pound contest.
Two other members of the men's team also competed tonight in Reno. Senior Josh Turner was decisioned by Army West Point's Vonn Grant in one of the 139-pound bouts, while classmate Levi Knox's bid to repeat his 165-pound title was halted by a decision from Penn State's Ian Vernon.
The women went 0-3 in quarterfinal action, as senior Laura Drapinski dropped a 112-pound decision to Navy's Zoe Wang, classmate Ellen Miota lost a 132-pound bout to Cincinnati's Sarah Stoner and freshman Madison Lloyd fell to Cincinnati's Cleopatra Steward at 139 pounds.
Air Force returns to action tomorrow (April 5) night for the semifinal round of the NCBA Championships.
