Sean Chieves, Cenada Clifton-Smith and Jordan Garivay advanced to the finals with Friday's victories.
RENO, Nev. – The Air Force boxing team picked up three victories during the second round of action at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships last night (April 5) in Reno. Overall, the Falcons went 3-5 during the semifinal round of competition at the Silver Legacy Grand Exposition Hall.
Juniors Sean Chieves, Cenada Clifton-Smith and Jordan Garivay advanced to the championship round after capturing victories during the semifinal round. Chieves moved to 2-0 on the weekend after earning a 4-1 decision over Army West Point's Calvin Hart in the 132-pound contest, while Clifton-Smith claimed a unanimous 175-pound victory over Navy's Charlie Akerblom in his first bout of the tournament. Garivay, also competing in his first contest of the weekend, easily earned a spot in the finals after forcing the referee to stop his 195-pound bout with Iowa State's Harsh Desai in the second round.
Five additional Falcons secured spots on the NCBA All-America team last night, despite dropping their semifinal contests. Juniors Devon Smith (147 pounds, Cincinnati's Nathan Todd) and Austin Dreyer (185 pounds, Navy's Biron McNeely) suffered 4-1 losses in their respective bouts, while classmates RJ Leon (119 pounds, North Carolina's Le Ho) and Levi Rate (156 pounds, Army West Point's John Koffman), as well as freshman Lawrence Barrett (125 pounds, Army West Point's Carlan Ivey) lost unanimous decisions in their bouts.
