Wyatt Murphy Opens Action at MW Championships

The freshman is in fourth after the first five events of the decathlon competition.
CLOVIS, Calif. – Air Force freshman Wyatt Murphy collected three career-best marks this evening (May 8), as he kicked off the 2019 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the first five events of the decathlon at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
After the first day of decathlon action, the freshman is in fourth, with 3564 points.
Murphy, who capped the day with a career-best 400-meter time of 48.66 to win that sub-event by 0.15 seconds, also collected for a pair of runner-up finishes in his first conference decathlon. The freshman kicked off the day with a second-place time of 11.04 in the 100-meter dash and an outdoor-best, second-place mark of 22'4¼" in the long jump. He also posted a personal-best mark in the shot put (29'9¼", seventh), while finishing fourth in the high jump (5'11¼").
Murphy returns to action tomorrow (May 9) for the final five decathlon events at 4:00 p.m., while individual events get underway at 8:45 p.m. (PT).
