NEW ORLEANS – After collecting scoring finishes at all three NCAA Championship events during the previous academic year, Air Force finished the 2018-19 campaign ranked 15th in the John McDonnell Men's Program of the Year standings, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced earlier this week.
Overall, Air Force's men were one of just 31 teams in the nation (15 men, 16 women) to score in all three Championship meets this season. It is the Falcons' first mention in the Program of the Year standings since the award was founded during the 2008-09 season.
The Falcons' five-man scoring cross country team of Mickey Davey, Nathan Thomas, Trevor Siniscalchi, Alec Schrank and Scott Johnson helped Air Force to a 20th-place finish in the team standings at the NCAA Cross Country Championships – a finish that equaled the program's second-highest team finish in the last 14 years. During the track and field season, Michael Rhoads finished collected top-eight marks in the 800-meter run at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Finishing eighth at the indoor meet and sixth at the outdoor meet, Rhoads earned First-Team All-America honors at both meets and placed the Falcons within the top 60 of the team standings (56th indoors, 50th outdoors).
In order to be eligible for the USTFCCCA Program of the Year award, teams must qualify for each of the season's NCAA Championships (cross country, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field). Scoring is based on the team's finish at each championship (i.e.: 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc), with the lowest total score for all three championships determining the award winner.
