AUSTIN, Texas – A strong qualifying run propelled Air Force junior Michael Rhoads into the finals of the 800-meter run at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which kicked off today (June 5) in Austin, Texas.
Competing in the second qualifying heat under the hot and humid conditions of Mike A. Myers Stadium on Wednesday night, Rhoads took the lead shortly after the bell lap began and was able to avoid a collision that impacted several trailing runners. With the top two runners earning an automatic bid into the finals, Rhoads clocked a time of 1:47.90 – the second-fastest time of his career and the second-fastest time in Academy history – to easily advance out of the semifinal round and into the NCAA finals, which are scheduled to take place at 8:44 p.m. (CT), on Friday, June 7.
