Women's Soccer Drops Double OT Thriller to Saint Francis

USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime, 3-2, to Saint Francis University, Friday evening, Aug. 30, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons (2-1) controlled almost the entire match, including outshooting the Red Flash (1-0-1), 24-11, but a goal by SFU in the 106th minute proved to be the difference.

Air Force's two goals both came in the first half and both came off the foot of junior Jillian Jamero, for her second and third goals of the season, respectively. Her first tally was assisted by senior Kasey Stavig and junior Emma Nelson, while freshman Lexi Romero helped on the second one. On top of the shot differential, in which AF had eight of them on net, the Falcons also totaled seven corner kicks to SFU's two.

The Falcons came out firing like they have in the first two games of the season, getting a shot and a corner in the first few minutes. The pressure led to the opening goal in the eighth minute as Stavig pushed the ball into the offensive zone, found Nelson, who found Jamero for the goal.

Air Force then took the next six shots as the pressure was practically relentless. This led to good things once again, as this time Romero found Jamero inside the box, and the junior tucked it home to give AF a 2-0 advantage in the 31st minute. It looked as if Air Force would take the shutout to the half, but SFU got one back in the 44th minute to make it 2-1 at the half.

Early in half number two, some weather in the area led to a 45 minute weather delay, halting any momentum from the first half. The Red Flash used this to their advantage, as they scored the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Despite immense pressure from the Falcons, including some clutch saves from the SFU keeper, the game went into OT tied at 2-2.

The first overtime did not have much action, leading to a second 10 minute period. There, SFU was set up with a corner in the 106th minute. A perfectly placed ball found the foot of an SFU forward right at the top of the box, and it found twine, ending the contest with the 3-2 defeat.

Air Force now gets the rest of the Parents Weekend off from competition as they prepare for a two-game weekend next Friday and Sunday. It all begins with a showdown with service academy rival Army West Point Friday, Sept. 6. Kickoff against the Black Knights from Cadet Soccer Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
