USAFA, Colo -- The Air Force Academy women's soccer team scored three first half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over service academy rival Army West Point, Saturday night, Sept 7 at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The Falcons (3-1) and Black Knights (2-2-1) were almost dead even on offense as AF was out-shot, 11-10. Army even had three more corners than the Falcons, 6-3.
On offense, three different Falcons scored goals, led by the game winner for freshman
Lexi Romero, her third of the season. Junior
Brittany Mahowald had the second goal, the first of her career, which was assisted by freshman
Kayla Milford. The final tally was scored by senior
Bree Bezdek, the fifth goal of her career, and she was assisted by freshman
Emiley Benner.
On defense, junior
Danielle Katz had her third shutout of the season. The Maryland native made four saves in the fourth start of her AF career.
Just like the three previous games, the Falcons came out firing in the early minutes. In the 10th minute, AF went from the defensive zone to the offensive zone in a hurry, as a through ball found Romero. She was able to finish off the opportunity, burying the shot in the top right corner to take a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons continued the pressure in the 25th minute, as this time Milford assisted on a Mahowald goal to make it 2-0 Air Force. It was the first goal of Mahowald's career. Late in the first half, AF put the capper on the terrific first stanza, as Benner found Bezdek for a goal in the 39th minute making it 3-0 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
In the second half, both teams were fairly even, as the Black Knights out-shot AF, 6-5. Katz made three big saves however to keep the goose egg on the board, and Air Force held on for the shutout victory.
Air Force will return to the pitch next weekend for it's first regular season road games this season. AF will face Jacksonville on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. MT.
