Last Time Out
Last weekend, Air Force bounced back from its only loss thus far with a commanding 3-0 win over service academy rival, Army West Point. The Falcons scored all three goals in the first half, with tallies from freshman Lexi Romero (10'), junior Brittany Mahowald (25'), and senior Bree Bezdek (39').
Because of inclement weather, the game against Army, which was originally scheduled for Friday, was moved to Saturday. As a result of that, the game between AF and Western Michigan was canceled, with no make up date planned.
Danielle Katz Named MW Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Junior goalkeeper Danielle Katz was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 8. It is the first weekly accolade for the Falcons this season, and the first of Katz's career.
Katz was once again stout in net in the 3-0 won over service academy rival Army West Point Saturday evening. The Maryland native made four crucial saves to preserve the shutout, while facing a total of 11 shots. Her efforts helped AF to its first win over Army since 2008, and the second shutout in as many games against the Black Knights.
It was the third shutout win for Katz in four games this season. Coming into the year, Katz had played in just two career games as a sophomore, serving as a backup goalkeeper and totaling 26 minutes. She is also just one of three Mountain West goalies with three or more shutouts this season.
Best Start Since 2011
With the Falcons out to a 3-1 start to the season, it is the best four game stretch to begin a season since a 3-1 beginning in 2011.
Rookies Making an Immediate Impact
The 2019 freshman class, which came in ranked as the 32nd ranked class according to Top Drawer Soccer, has already made an immediate impact on both sides of the field. Freshman forward Lexi Romero leads the team with nine points (3G, 3A), which ranks tied for third in the MW Conference.
Freshmen also tallying assists are Emiley Benner (2), Faith Lee, and Kayla Milford. Milford has also started all four games on defense, and totaled 289 minutes.
In all, freshmen have accounted for 1,472 minutes total in the first four games, which equates to 35 percent of the total minutes played.
Sharing is Caring
On Air Force's 10 goals this season, there have been a total of 11 assists. Freshman Lexi Romero and junior Emma Nelson are tied for the team lead with three each. The 11 assists ranks 51st in the nation, while the 2.75 assists per game ranks 19th.
Air Force in the Sunshine State
This will be Air Force's first regular season match in the state Florida since the match-up against Jacksonville back in 2004. That game was played in Orlando as part of the UCF Fall Invitational. To date, that is the only other time AF women's soccer has played in the Sunshine State.
Opponent Connections
Against Jacksonville, the Dolphins have a pair of Colorado connections. First, senior midfielder Zoe Zinis is a CO native, hailing from Broomfield. Secondly, JU head coach Laura Busby was recently the assistant head coach for UCCS, leaving in 2017.

Air Force returns home for the 2019 non-conference finale, as the Falcons host Seattle University at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Kickoff against the Redhawks is set for 6 p.m. MT.
