JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team had its red hot offense cooled down in a 0-0 draw against Jacksonville University Friday evening, Sept. 13, at Southern Oak Stadium. The Falcons (3-1-1) outshot the Dolphins (0-4-1) by a final tally of 15-6, including a 10-4 advantage for shots on net.
For junior goalie Danielle Katz, it was her fourth shutout in five games this season. The keeper made four crucial saves while facing the six total shots. On offense, freshman Lexi Romero had five total shots, including four on frame. Fellow freshman Faith Lee also tallied multiple shots, with two, while senior defender Kasey Stavig had two as well from the backline. Stavig also played all 110 minutes, the only field player for the Falcons to do so.
The first half was evenly matched, with both teams almost the same with possession in each other's defensive zones. The Falcons got five shots off, one on net, while the Dolphins got three opportunities, with one on net as well. Despite the opportunities, neither team was able to capitalize, keeping it scoreless into the half.
In the second half, the action picked up a little more, with Air Force getting all six of its shots on net to keep testing the JU keeper. Meanwhile, Katz and the defense faced just two shots as they held the Dolphin offense mostly in check. In the end though, the 90 minutes weren't enough as the game went to overtime scoreless.
In the first overtime, Katz made a heroic save in the 96th minute on a wide open shot in the box to keep the Dolphins off the board, and send it to double OT. In the final 10 minutes, AF controlled the entire stanza, getting three shots off to JU's zero, but it still was not enough, resulting in the scoreless draw.
AF remains in Jacksonville this weekend when they face North Florida, Sunday, Sept. 14. Kickoff against the Ospreys is set for 11 a.m. MT.
