Falcons Prevail over North Florida in Overtime, 3-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Air Force Academy women's soccer team used a second half comeback to win, 3-2, in overtime Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15, at Hodges Stadium. The Falcons were held scoreless though the first 75 minutes of the game before scoring three goals in the final 25 minutes to secure the win.

Three different players scored for the Falcons. The first goal was knocked in by freshman Lexi Romero, which was her fourth of the season. She was assisted by classmate Emiley Benner. The equalizer was scored by freshman Catherine Bakken, which was started on a free kick by junior Brittany Mahowald. The game winner in OT was scored by freshman Faith Lee, her first of her career, and she was assisted by junior Jillian Jamero.

In the first half, UNF scored two goals back to back in the 11th and 12th minute, to take an early 2-0 lead. For the Falcons, they had just three shots in the first 45 minutes and took the two goal deficit into the half.

The second half started off as most of the same story, as the Falcons were held scoreless heading into the final 15 minutes. In the 75th minute, Romero broke the ice with a goal, assisted by classmate Benner. Her fourth goal of the year made it 2-1.

With less than three minutes to play, the Falcons were looking for the equalizer. They found it in the 87th minute as on a free kick, a ball off the foot of Mahowald found Bakken and the back of the net to tie the score and send the game to OT.

In the first overtime period, it looked like the game was going to head to a second overtime but Lee had other ideas. On yet another set piece, Lee was able to bury the game winner, assisted by Jameeo, to seal the deal in the 99th minute.

Air Force returns home next weekend, Sept. 20, for the non-conference finale against Seattle University. Kickoff against SU is set for 6 p.m. MT.
