Air Force Pair Opens Heptathlon Action

Wyatt Murphy is in second after four events with 2895 points.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Sophomore Wyatt Murphy and junior Tyler Gurchiek kicked off the 30th-annual Air Force Invitational this afternoon (Jan. 16), with the first four events of the heptathlon at the Cadet Field House. Murphy registered 2895 points to lead the pair after the opening day of action.
Murphy, who added more than 350 points to his previous best Day 1 total, is the top collegiate – and second overall – with his 2895 points during the first four events. Highlighting the sophomore's day was a winning, 886-point finish in the 60-meter dash (career-best 6.99) and two runner-up finishes – an 816-point outing in the long jump (career-best 23'0") and a 767-point performance in the high jump (6'5"). A personal-best throw of 29'6¾" (426 points) capped his opening day.
With 2240 points, Gurchiek sits in sixth after the first day of action. The junior opened the day with a 684-point performance in the 60-meter dash (7.59), while collecting his additional points in the long jump (19'6", 574 points), shot put (29'3¾", 422 points) and high jump (5'7¾", 560).
The Falcons' two multi-event athletes close out the heptathlon tomorrow (Jan. 17), with the final three events beginning at 10:00 a.m. (MT). The rest of the Air Force Invitational gets underway with the weight throw and long jump at noon, while several qualifying races are slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
