Falcons Fall to No. 18 UNI in Big 12 Dual

AF got three wins, including a pin from heavyweight Kayne Hutchison
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team fell in Big 12 dual action to No. 18 Northern Iowa, 28-12, Sunday afternoon, Jan. 19, inside Clune Arena.
The Falcons (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) earned three wins on the day, the biggest a pin from heavyweight sophomore Kayne Hutchison. It was his third dual win on the season and fifth pin. The other two wins were decision wins from senior 165 pounder Randy Meneweather and junior 197 pounder Casey Jumps.
The dual started at 149, where UNI (4-3, 3-1 Big 12) won the first two matches by close decisions to take an early 6-0 lead. At 165, Meneweather got AF on the board with a 7-4 decision win, including just under three minutes of riding time, to make it 6-3. Meneweather moves to 18-5 on the season and 4-1 in duals (2-0 Big 12).
UNI then got bonus point wins from two top-five wrestlers to extend their lead to 16-3 heading into 197. The Falcons bounced back there, as Jumps used two minutes of riding time to take a 1-0 decision win and get the team score back to 16-6. Then at heavyweight, Hutchison locked up a first period fall to get AF back to within 16-12 with three matches to go.
The Panthers countered with a pin of their own at 125, however, to retake a 10 point lead, 22-12 with two matches remaining. They put the dual out of reach at 133 lbs. with a decision win, and then capped things off with another decision win at 141 to result in the 28-12 score.
Air Force will return to the mats next Saturday, Jan. 25, when they play host to the All Academy Championships. The battle for Service Academy superiority will take place in the East Gym and run throughout the day.
