Freshman pair led Falcons to sweep of Niagara last weekend
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – A pair of Air Force freshmen earned PSE Event Housing Atlantic Hockey Association weekly honors in helping lead the Falcons to a sweep of Niagara, Jan. 17-18, at Cadet Ice Arena.
Defenseman Brandon Koch was named the AHA Player of the Week as he scored a career-best four points (1-3-4) against the Purple Eagles. His 2.00 points per game were the most by any player in the league last week.
In the first game against Niagara, he scored a career-best three points (1-2-3). He assisted on the first two goals and then scored an even-strength goal to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead. On Saturday, he forced a turnover in the neutral zone and had an assist on the game-winning goal. He was a +3 in the series, tied as the second-best by any player in the league last week.
Koch is the first freshman, and the first defenseman, to be named Player of the Week this season.
Forward Blake Bride was named the AHA Rookie of the Week as he scored the first two goals of his career in the Niagara series. His two goals were tied as the most by any AHA freshman last week. In game one, he scored Air Force's second goal, the first of his career, to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. In game two, he scored the first goal of the game as the Falcons never trailed.
The weekly honors were the first of each player's career. They are the fifth and sixth Falcons to earn conference honors this season.
Air Force (8-10-4, 8-6-4 AHA) travels to Worcester, Mass., for a two-game series against the Holy Cross Crusaders, Friday-Saturday, Jan.24-25, at 7:05 pm ET each night.
