Falcons Conclude Florida Trip with Setback at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – The Air Force Academy baseball team concluded its Florida swing with an 8-1 defeat to Stetson University, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 16, at Melching Field. AF took a 1-0 lead in the first, but could not scrape together any more runs the rest of the way.

AF tallied five hits on the day, all singles. Sophomore Alexander Pup had a two hit day while sophomore Gabriel Garcia had the lone RBI on a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, AF got some more solid relief as freshman Cade Moulton and junior Ben Hauser combined to hold Stetson scoreless over the final four innings. Moulton went 2.1, striking out two, while Hauser went the final 1.2 without surrendering a base runner and striking out three.

The Falcons wasted no time striking first in the top of the first, as a leadoff walk came around to score on a sac fly from Garcia to make it 1-0 early on. The Hatters tied it up in the second on an RBI double, making it a 1-1 game after the first two innings. Stetson then got a sac fly in the third to take a 2-1 lead before blowing the game open in the fourth with six runs to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

That lead would hold as AF would only muster two more hits the rest of the way. Meanwhile on the mound, Moulton and Hauser would combine to hold Stetson scoreless over the final four innings, only allowing four baserunners total.

Air Force will be back in action next Friday-Sunday, Feb. 21-23 for the annual Freedom Classic against the Naval Academy in Kinston, N.C. Action against the Midshipmen will take place at Grainger Stadium, the home of the Down East Wood Ducks the High-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.
