HOUSTON, Texas – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team concluded action on day one of the 2020 WAC Championships, Wednesday evening, Feb. 26, at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston. After the first three events, AF set two new school records, won one event, and sits in first place overall.
"It was just a terrific start for us tonight," Head Coach Rob Clayton said. "With both of the school records, winning the 200 medley relay, and also a fantastic effort from the divers, we had a really good start to the weekend."
The first event of the day was the 200 medley relay. The squad of sophomores Isaac Gwin, Aaron Pang, and Matthew Lattin, as well as senior Zach Nelson, took gold with a new school record time of 1:25.71, besting the previous record set back in 2016 (1:26.03).
The other swimming event was the 800 free relay, in which the team of freshmen Wen Zhang and Jaykob Williams, sophomore Corey Shepard, and Gwin placed second with a season-best time of 6:26.78. In the opening leg of the 200 free for Zhang, he set a new school record in the opening leg with a 1:35.15, besting the previous set by Jordan Dahle set back in 2017.
Over on the diving board, AF's four divers all scored points in the 3M. Junior Cole Armagost was the top finisher, taking second with a 338.10. Also in the A final were sophomore Jack Macceca and freshman Brett Jenkins. Macceca placed fifth and Jenkins seventh. Then in the B final, senior Jack Zocher took 13th overall.
As a team, AF has earned 121 points to lead the team score after day one. Grand Canyon is in second, trailing by 30 points.
"We're excited to get the individual swimming events started tomorrow," Clayton continued. "And we are looking forward to the tough team score battle all weekend long."
