Falcons Finish First at Bearcat Brawl

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Combining for a 7-2 record, the Air Force boxing team finished first at the Bearcat Brawl this evening (Feb. 8) in Cincinnati. The men accounted for a 4-1 record inside the ring at Cincinnati Fitness and Boxing, while the women finished the night with a 3-1 slate.

After their performances at the Brawl, senior Devon Smith and freshman Corrina Swift earned Boxer of the Week honors. Smith capped the men's night with a 156-pound victory over Cincinnati's Nathan Todd, while Swift claimed a decision over the Bearcats' Olivia Boling in the women's 115-pound bout.

The men picked up wins over boxers from three additional NCBA squads on Saturday night. Senior Jacob Ragland opened the night with a 147-pound victory over Iowa State's Armando Garnica, while sophomore Francisco Garcia decisioned Ohio State's Andy Kirk at 165 pounds and classmate Wayne Overman claimed the heavyweight title after forcing the ref to stop his bout with West Virginia's Killian Cox in the second.

In addition to Swift's victory at 115 pounds, junior Shay Stayton and senior Abigail Aldecoa also earned wins over boxers from Cincinnati. Stayton claimed the 125-pound title after forcing the referee to stop her bout with Miranda Benjamin in the second, while Aldecoa decisioned Isabel Calogeras at 126 pounds.

Air Force returns to the Academy for the Wing Open quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 13, while select boxers will travel to Santa Clara, Calif., for the Dodge Ackerman Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 15.
