Falcons Fall to South Dakota State in Season Opener, 24-14

AF notched many additional wins in extra matches
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team fell in its 2020-21 season opener to Big 12 foe South Dakota State, 24-14, Sunday afternoon, Jan. 17, inside the East Gym. The Falcons (0-1, 0-1 Big 12) had four bout wins, including two by major decision.
The dual started at the top with sophomore Cody Phippen at 125 making his dual debut. The fifth-place Big 12 placer from a season ago used a six-point first period to hold on to a 6-3 decision win.
Following that, junior Jared Van Vleet matched-up with #13 Zach Price. Van Vleet was up to the challenge, as he notched a huge near fall in the second period and used the momentum to get a 15-4 major decision. After two matches, AF led 7-0.
South Dakota State (2-3, 1-2) then went on a run, with four-straight wins to get a lead of their own, 16-7. Senior captain Cody Surratt broke the streak with a solid 7-2 decision win to tighten it back up, 16-10, with three matches to go.
Despite the score being within reach, the Jackrabbits won the next two, including a win by tech fall, to put the dual away. Freshman heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson ended the match on a high note, as in his AF debut, he rolled to a 9-0 major decision win, which included over five minutes of riding time.
While the dual was going on, and then for many hours after the conclusion of the dual, bonus matches were contested on a pair of mats. In all, AF wrestled in 36 extra matches outside of the dual. The dual starters who notched additional wins were Phippen (6-1 decision), Van Vleet (5-3 decision), senior Lenny Petersen (9-7 decision), sophomore Dylan Martinez (6-3 decision), senior Parker Simington (7-4 decision), junior Kayne Hutchison (15-0 tech fall), and Hendrickson (Fall 1:23).
Other than the dual starters, AF notched six other wins from non-starters in extra matches. Leading the way with a solid AF debut was freshman 184 pounder Calvin Sund, who went a perfect 2-0 with two solid decision wins.
The Falcons will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 22, when they head up to Greeley, Colo. for a neutral site dual with nationally ranked Oklahoma State. Action against the Cowboys is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. MT.
