AF won two of the first three matches
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team fell in a Big 12 dual to #5 Oklahoma State, 33-6, Friday evening, Jan. 22, inside the East Gym. AF won two of the first three bouts before OSU won the final seven to run away with the win.
The dual started at the top as sophomore #28 Cody Phippen took on #13 Trevor Mastrogiovanni. The first ended 2-1 in favor of OSU after a takedown and escape. Phippen rode out the entire second period to gain riding time, but Mastrogiovanni was able to answer with a ride out in the third to keep the 2-1 score and give OSU the early 3-0 lead.
At 133, junior #16 Jared Van Vleet got AF on the board with a great move in the third. Holding a 1-0 lead into the third, Van Vleet started on top and used a suck back move to get his opponent on his back. Despite seeming to get a pin, the Cowboy wrestler got out of it. Van Vleet then rode out the period to secure riding time and the 6-0 decision win. He moves to 3-0 on the season.
AF kept the momentum at 141, as senior #27 Lenny Petersen got a takedown at the clock expired, and with riding time, secured a solid 5-4 decision win over Dusty Hone, who spent a majority of last season in the top-20 nationally. After three bouts, AF held a slight lead, 6-3.
From there, OSU used the strength of seven straight ranked wrestlers to win each of the last seven matches. AF had two bouts that were within two points, but otherwise the Cowboys had bonus point wins the rest of the way for a 33-6 final score.
In a bonus match, freshman Sam Wolf picked up his first win as a Falcon with a nice 9-4 decision win. Classmate #26 Wyatt Hendrickson also got a win in a bonus match to move to 3-1 on the season.
The Falcons will return to the mat next Saturday, Jan. 30, for a dual against Wyoming. Action against the Cowboys in Laramie is set to begin at 5 p.m. MT.
