Falcons Fall to Wyoming in Big 12 Dual

AF won the first two matches and three total
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team fell in dual action to Big 12 rival Wyoming, 22-9, Saturday evening, Jan. 30, at the Arena-Auditorium. The Falcons (0-3, 0-3) won the first two bouts, before Wyoming (2-2, 1-1 Big 12) rattled off wins in seven of the final eight matches to run away with the win.
The dual started at 141, and senior #25 Lenny Petersen got the Falcons started with a solid 5-2 decision. With the match tied at two with about 30 seconds left, Petersen notched a takedown and got riding time to take the win and get AF a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Dylan Martinez followed that up with a 9-4 decision win at 149. He notched his first dual win of the season by using three takedowns, two escapes, and riding time to give AF a 6-0 lead after two matches.
Wyoming then rattled off six-straight wins, including one by major decision, to roar ahead, 19-6. At heavyweight, freshman #26 Wyatt Hendrickson had the defending Big 12 champion, #11 ranked Brian Andrews, on the ropes. The rookie got two reversals and two late takedowns to get within one, but Andrews held on for the narrow 10-9 decision.
Freshman #28 Cody Phippen broke the streak with a 9-4 decision win at 125, which included a four-point near fall. His win moved him to 3-1 on the season and made it 19-9 into the final bout.
The 133 match featured a top-25 matchup, as junior #15 Jared Van Vleet squared up with #22 Job Greenwood. With the dual tied at four with just seconds to go, Greenwood was able to notch a takedown right before the buzzer to get a 6-4 decision win and seal the 22-9 final score.
In bonus matches, AF got four additional wins, led by a 17-0 tech fall by junior Harlan Steffensmeier in his season debut. The other wins came via decision by freshman Will VomBaur, senior Jacoby Ward, and freshman Calvin Sund.
The Falcons will return to the mats next Saturday, Feb. 6, for a three-dual day. The day begins with the senior day dual against Fresno State inside the East Gym at 11 a.m. AF then heads up the road to Greeley to take on the host UNC Bears at 6 p.m., followed by West Virginia at 8:30 p.m.
