Golfers travel to Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team travels to Las Cruces, N.M., for the annual Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico State, Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 18-19, at the New Mexico State Golf Course (7,242 yards -- par 71). The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in a shotgun start at 8:30 am MT each day. Live stats will be available on www.golfstat.com.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force and the host school, New Mexico State, the 11-team field includes Houston Baptist, Northern Colorado, Prairie View A&M, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Incarnate Word, UTRGV, Western Illinois and Western New Mexico.
LAST WEEK: The Air Force golf team shot a season best 297 in the final round of the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic, Oct. 12, at the Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno, Nevada. After two days of battling the cold and wind, the Falcons shot a 297 on the final day of the 54-hole tournament. Junior Isaac Layne led the Falcons with a one-over-par 73 on the final day and a 232 in the tournament. Layne's season-best round included four birdies. Freshman Christopher Park matched his collegiate career best round of 74 in the final round and shot a 233 for the tournament. Park birdied two of his last three holes. His 233 was his collegiate career best. Sophomores Aaron Kuznik and Max Heupel shot a 75 on the final day. Kuznik made three birdies and played his final 16 holes at even par. The round was Heupel's season best and second best of his collegiate career. Kuznik shot 235 for the tournament while Heupel came in at 239. Air Force placed 15th in the tournament with a three-round total of 929. New Mexico won the tournament with an 850, followed by San Francisco (854) and Nevada (877).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Junior Isaac Layne leads the team with a 77.42 stroke average. Layne, along with sophomore Aaron Kuznik and freshman Christopher have played all 12 team rounds. Freshman Cameron Kahle has also played 12 rounds, including one individual tournament. Kuznik has the team's second best stroke average at 77.45. Kahle's 71 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational Individual tournament is the best round of the season by a Falcon. The team's 297 at the Wolf Pack Classic last week is the best of the season.
