Falcons defeat UTEP in season opener

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force rifle team, ranked sixth in the nation, opened the 2021-22 season with a win over No. 20 UTEP, 4714-4532, Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Cadet Rifle Range.
Air Force (1-0) won both the smallbore (2336-2230) and air rifle (2378-2302). Sophomore Peninah D'Souza led the way with an aggregate score of 1176. Fellow sophomore Morgan Kreb was second overall (1175) while junior Jordan Williams was third (1173). Senior Devin Schwindt shot an 1171 for fourth place, followed by freshman Scott Rockett (1170) senior Ryan Habeck (168) and freshman Lauren Hurley (1162). Isabel Brooks was the top UTEP shooter at 1143.
In the smallbore competition, Schwindt led the way with a 585, followed by Williams and Habeck (584), Kreb (583), D'Souza (582), Rockett (573) and Hurley (567). In air rifle, Rockett led the way in his first collegiate match with a 597 that included three perfect scores and three 99s. Hurley was second (595), followed by D'Souza (594), Kreb (592), Williams (589), Schwindt (586) and Habeck (584).
"We had a very strong match in both smallbore and air rifle," said head coach Launi Meili. "Our returning shooters led the way in smallbore with Devin Schwindt shooting a stellar 585. Jordan Williams and Ryan Habeck also pushed our score higher with a 584 each. The freshmen led the way in air rifle. Our team score of 4714 was only three points below of school record!"
Air Force returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 6, when the Falcons host the President's Trophy in the Cadet Rifle Range. The annual match against Army, Navy and the Coast Guard will begin at 8 a.m.
