USAF ACADEMY – Air Force sophomore Sam Wolf, a 174-pounder on the Falcon wrestling team, has been selected along with 14 other wrestlers from across the nation to represent the United States at the Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. Wrestling action takes place Dec. 1-4.
"It's a great honor and privilege every time we can send someone the United States Air Force Academy to represent the country on the national scale," head coach Sam Barber said. "Wolf is the fourth Falcon to represent America in recent years. If you come to the Air Force Academy you will get a full ride scholarship that includes a world class education, an opportunity to be part of selflessly serving your country, and you can compete at a high level to include the Big 12 and international competitions."
Wolf joins the elite ranks of some of Air Force's most prolific wrestlers in Alex Mossing and current teammate Wyatt Hendrickson, who represented USA at the U23 Greco World Championships and the UWW Junior World Championships, respectively. Prior to Mossing and Hendrickson, Air Force standout Cole VonOhlen, a four-time NCAA Qualifier, represented the Long Blue Line at the 2015 CISM Military World Games. VonOhlen and Mossing were both apart of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP).
The Junior Pan Am Games will consist of 18 Olympic weight classes across the three Olympic styles. In order to qualify a weight, countries had to produce a top-eight finish in the category at the Junior Pan American Championships earlier this summer. The United States qualified all six in men's freestyle and Greco-Roman, while securing five spots in women's freestyle. However, due to late roster changes, the U.S. will only send three athletes in women's freestyle.
Wolf, a 2021 UWW Junior Nationals All-American (86 kg), will compete in the men's freestyle segment alongside 2018 Cadet World silver medalist and 2021 Junior World Team member Richard Figueroa (57 kg), 2021 Cadet Pan Am champion Peter Casale Jr. (97 kg), Fargo All-Americans Cody Chittum (65 kg) and Rocco Welsh (74 kg), and Matthew Cover (125 kg). They will be coached by National assistant coach Joe Russell and Jeff Buxton.
