AF returns five individual champions and two winning relays from a season ago
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team is prepped and ready to defend its title at the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Championships, set to be held Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 24-27. The swimmers will be in action at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium, while the divers will compete at Northern Arizona's Aquatic Complex.
Each day of the swimming championships will be streamed live, with the prelims on the WAC Facebook page, and finals on ESPN+ (except internationally where it can be watched on the WAC Digital Network). Each round of the diving championships will also be on the WAC FB page. Live results will also be available. Access to everything is at the Championship Central Link.
Due to state and local restrictions, spectators will NOT be allowed into any of the facilities.
The Falcons concluded the abbreviated regular season with a 3-1 dual record, while going 2-0 in its conference meets. The WAC Championships will represent the first time the Falcons have swam in competition outside the state of Colorado this season.
Air Force is seeking to defend its historic WAC title in 2020, and win its fourth conference championship in the last six years. Last season, the Falcons finished with a new modern WAC record 864 points and finished 172 points ahead of the second place team. Overall on the weekend, the Falcons won 12 of the 21 events. Air Force also set nine school records, while also putting 30 new times in the all-time Academy top-10.
The Blue and Silver are in a good spot to contend for that title, as they have numerous swimmers, divers, and relays that sit near the top of the WAC rankings. AF also returns five of its individual champions and two complete relay teams from its four relay wins.
In a poll of conference coaches, Air Force was picked to finish second after receiving 21 points, and one first place vote. UNLV was picked as the favorite with 25 points and the remaining five first place votes.
The four-day championship opens on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. MT with the 200-medley relay and 800 free relay, while the divers begin competition Thursday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m. MT with the prelims of the 1-meter.
